# Comparing telehealth services: what to verify before you book

Check who provides care, how follow-up works, what the service costs and when an in-person visit may be needed.

A useful telehealth comparison starts with specific arrangements: who provides the care, what the visit covers, how follow-up works and what happens when online care is not enough. A polished website or a promise of a fast prescription does not answer those questions.

Telehealth can support appointments, follow-up and communication, but it is not suitable for every condition or every situation. [1]

## Identify the clinical and practical roles

Look for the name of the healthcare provider or practice responsible for clinical decisions. If a separate platform handles scheduling or payment, understand that role too. The same review should identify where prescriptions, if appropriate, are dispensed and whom to contact about a medication question.

FDA's online-pharmacy guidance points to verifiable details such as state licensure, prescription requirements, a U.S. address and access to a licensed pharmacist. [2]

## Make follow-up concrete

“Support included” can describe very different services. The useful details are the contact route, what kinds of questions it handles and whether follow-up visits or additional services carry separate charges.

It should also be clear how the service handles symptoms that need an examination, an in-person test or urgent care. A telehealth appointment is a way to deliver care, not a guarantee that every step can stay online. [1]

## Check privacy and payment separately

HHS recommends verifying the provider and using secure communication, such as the patient portal, for health information. It also advises avoiding public Wi-Fi and shared devices when possible. [3]

Before paying, read the full charge, billing interval, cancellation terms and what happens if a prescription is not appropriate. These are terms to verify, not assumptions to make from a monthly headline price.
