Tell the surgical and anesthesia teams about semaglutide before a planned procedure, including procedures using deep sedation. The medication can delay stomach emptying, which can matter even when fasting instructions have been followed. [1][2]

A generic online rule about skipping a dose is not a substitute for the procedure team's instructions.

## Why the medication matters during anesthesia

Food or liquid remaining in the stomach can enter the airway during anesthesia, a complication called aspiration. The semaglutide label describes rare reports in people receiving GLP-1 medicines during procedures. It also states that available data do not establish whether temporarily stopping treatment reliably removes the risk. [1]

That makes advance planning important. Mentioning the medication for the first time at check-in leaves less opportunity to agree on a plan.

## Instructions depend on the situation

Current patient guidance from the American Society of Anesthesiologists says many people can continue their GLP-1 medication. Decisions account for factors such as gastrointestinal symptoms, recent treatment changes and the planned procedure. The prescribing and procedural teams should coordinate. [2]

For some people, the team may use different food or fluid instructions, assess the stomach with ultrasound or change the timing or anesthesia plan. Those are clinical decisions, not a checklist to apply independently. [2]

## Information to have ready

Useful details include the exact medication and formulation, the date of the most recent dose, recent changes and symptoms such as nausea, vomiting or prolonged fullness. Include other prescribed medicines and supplements as well. [1][2]

The agreed instructions should cover both the period before the procedure and how treatment will be handled afterward. If directions from different offices conflict, they need reconciliation before the procedure rather than guesswork by the patient.
