# High prolactin and low libido in men

Prolactin can affect sexual function, but an elevated result has several possible causes and may need repeat testing.

Prolactin is one possible part of a low-libido evaluation. Higher levels can affect testicular function and contribute to reduced sexual desire or erection problems. A prolactin test helps investigate that possibility; it does not explain every change in sexual function. [1]

Prolactin is made by the pituitary, a small gland at the base of the brain. Although it is best known for its role in milk production, men also produce it. [1]

## An elevated result is a finding, not a diagnosis

Possible causes include certain medicines, an underactive thyroid, kidney disease and a prolactin-producing pituitary tumor. That tumor, called a prolactinoma, is generally noncancerous. The blood result alone cannot distinguish among these causes. [1][2]

This is why the review includes symptoms and medication history as well as the number. A provider may check thyroid function or other hormones and decide whether imaging is warranted. Not every mildly elevated result automatically calls for a scan. [1][2]

## Why the test may be repeated

Prolactin varies during the day. Stress, exercise and other factors can cause small increases, so repeat testing may clarify whether an elevation persists. Preparation and timing should follow the laboratory's instructions. Prescribed medicines should not be stopped solely to change a test result. [1]

A comparison is easier to interpret when the previous report, collection time and medication list are available.

## Symptoms worth describing separately

Low desire and trouble maintaining an erection are different experiences. Reporting which has changed helps the evaluation. Breast changes or nipple discharge, headaches and vision changes are also relevant because they can accompany prolactin-related conditions. [1][2]

A sudden severe headache or abrupt visual change needs urgent medical attention. Those symptoms should not wait for a routine libido appointment. [2]

A prolactin result becomes useful when it helps explain the symptoms alongside the rest of the history.
