Why hair sheds after pregnancy, when fullness usually returns and which changes deserve a closer look.

Postpartum hair shedding often begins a few months after birth and peaks around month four. Most people regain their usual fullness by their child's first birthday. The delay can make the shedding feel unrelated to pregnancy, but it follows the hair growth cycle. [1]

## Why it starts months later

Falling estrogen levels after delivery can cause increased shedding, called telogen effluvium. The visible change arrives after the hormonal change, rather than immediately after birth. Seeing more hair in a brush does not, by itself, establish permanent hair loss. [1][2]

The pattern matters as much as the amount. A provider may distinguish temporary shedding from hereditary thinning or another cause, and more than one process can happen at the same time. [2][3]

## Recovery is gradual

Normal fullness does not return on the day shedding slows. The American Academy of Dermatology describes recovery over months, with many people recovering before the one-year mark. That is a general timeline, not a deadline every person meets. [1]

Hair-care changes can make the waiting period easier. Volumizing shampoo and lighter conditioner may help hair look fuller while it recovers. They change appearance; they do not prove that the underlying growth cycle has changed. [1]

## When the explanation needs another look

If fullness has not returned after a year, the Academy recommends evaluation for another cause. A visit may also be useful sooner when the pattern is troubling or unclear. A scalp examination and the history of when shedding began help distinguish the possibilities. Blood tests are selected if the history or examination suggests a deficiency, hormonal problem or other condition. They are not automatically needed for every postpartum change. [1][3]

Dates are useful context: delivery, the first noticeable shedding and any later change in the pattern. Those details often tell a clearer story than the amount of hair from one shower.
