# Perimenopause and metabolic health: which numbers add useful context?

Glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol answer different questions when body composition changes in midlife.

A changing waistline during perimenopause can prompt a useful metabolic-health review. It does not, by itself, diagnose insulin resistance. Blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol each add different information. [1][2][3]

## Glucose: is blood sugar regulation changing?

A1c, fasting plasma glucose and an oral glucose tolerance test can assess prediabetes. NIDDK notes that insulin resistance and prediabetes often have no symptoms, and that direct tests of insulin resistance are mainly used in research. [1]

A glucose assessment can therefore be informative even when someone feels well.

## Blood pressure and cholesterol: a broader risk picture

High blood pressure commonly causes no symptoms. Measuring it addresses a risk factor that a hormone panel does not measure. [2]

A lipid panel reports different components, including LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. The results are interpreted alongside other cardiovascular risk factors including blood pressure, smoking and family history. [3]

## Put body composition beside the lab results

The SWAN study found faster fat gain and declining lean mass during the menopause transition, without an equivalent acceleration in total weight gain. Because this was observational research, it describes a population pattern rather than proving why an individual’s body changed. [4]

That is a reason to read the scale alongside health measures and physical function. The goal is to identify changes that matter to health and follow-up.

A useful follow-up comparison keeps the question consistent: which result changed, under what circumstances, and does it alter the assessment?
