# Are peptides medicines or supplements? Read the product category

Peptide describes a molecule. Prescription drugs, compounded preparations, dietary supplements and research chemicals follow different rules.

“Peptide” describes a short chain of amino acids. It does not tell you whether the product in front of you is an approved medicine, a compounded preparation or something sold for laboratory research. [1]

That category matters because the evidence and regulatory review differ.

## FDA-approved medicines

For an approved drug, FDA has evaluated safety and effectiveness for particular uses. The labeling identifies those uses and provides information about risks and administration. Approval does not mean risk-free, and a claim about a different use needs separate consideration. [2]

## Compounded preparations

Compounding can meet an individual patient’s medical need when an FDA-approved medicine is not appropriate. Compounded drugs themselves are not FDA-approved, and FDA does not verify their safety, effectiveness or quality before marketing. [3]

The label should make clear that the preparation is compounded.

## Dietary supplements

Dietary supplements are regulated differently from drugs. FDA does not approve supplements for safety and effectiveness before they are sold. Supplements may also interact with medicines or affect laboratory testing, which makes the ingredient list important. [4]

## Research chemicals

A “research use only” disclaimer is not permission for human use. In a 2026 warning letter, FDA found that human-use marketing claims established the intended use of products despite research-only disclaimers. The agency identified them as unapproved drugs. [5]

The practical reading order is straightforward: identify the exact ingredient and formulation, establish the product category, and then examine evidence for the claimed purpose.
