# Peptides and “reverse aging” claims: what evidence would count?

A biomarker change, early safety study and longer life are different findings. How to assess the evidence behind peptide longevity claims.

“Reverses aging” is too broad to evaluate until the claim names an outcome. Does it mean a changed blood test, improved function, fewer illnesses or longer life? Those findings would require different studies.

The product also needs a name. Peptides are short amino-acid chains, not a single intervention with one predictable effect. [1]

## Separate a measured change from its interpretation

A blood test measures something specific. Interpreting that result requires its purpose, reference range and the person’s broader health context. MedlinePlus notes that an out-of-range value can occur in a healthy person, while an in-range result does not necessarily mean good health. [2]

If a longevity claim rests on a laboratory change, the next question is whether the research actually measured a health benefit. A number moving in the intended direction and a person living longer are different observations.

## Read the study’s purpose

FDA describes early clinical trials as investigations of safety, how a drug behaves in the body and appropriate dosing. Later trials are designed to test treatment benefits in a defined population. Study size and duration also affect which adverse effects can be detected. [3]

A small, short-term study can therefore provide useful early information without answering a lifespan question. The relevant details are who participated, what they received, what was compared, what changed and how long follow-up lasted. [3]

## Check what “approved” refers to

An approved medicine has been evaluated for the uses in its labeling. A new claim outside those uses does not inherit FDA’s finding of safety and effectiveness. [4]

For any proposed longevity product, a credible account should finish the sentence precisely: this formulation was studied in these people and produced this result.
