# Personalized peptide treatment: what to ask before paying

A personalized recommendation needs a specific purpose, evidence and medical context. A large biomarker panel alone does not supply them.

A personalized recommendation should explain why a particular product fits a particular clinical question.

“Peptide” names a molecular category: short chains of amino acids. It does not identify one shared treatment, benefit or monitoring plan. [1]

## Start with a defined purpose

FDA approval connects a particular drug with an evaluated use and labeling. If an approved medicine is proposed for a different condition, route or dosing approach, that is an off-label use. FDA has not established safety and effectiveness for that unapproved use. [2]

A clear explanation should therefore identify the ingredient and formulation, the goal, the evidence that applies and any uncertainty.

## Use labs to answer a question

Lab values need interpretation alongside symptoms, health history and other findings. Reference ranges differ between laboratories, and a result outside a range can occur in a healthy person. A result inside the range also does not guarantee that every health concern has been resolved. [3]

The useful connection is specific: what does this test tell us, and how would its result change the decision?

## Account for the person’s circumstances

NIDDK’s guidance on weight-management medicines gives a concrete example. Selection considers medical history, other medicines, side effects, health goals and cost. People vary in both response and tolerability. [4]

Those details are substantive personalization. They explain the choice and how it will be judged over time.
