# Peptide certificates of analysis: what a COA can verify

A certificate of analysis reports specific batch tests. It does not establish that a research chemical is safe or effective for human use.

A certificate of analysis, or COA, reports the results of specified tests on a batch of material. Its value depends on the tests, methods and batch identity behind it. A purity percentage by itself leaves much of that information out. [1]

FDA’s manufacturing guidance for active pharmaceutical ingredients describes a COA that identifies the ingredient and batch, lists tests and acceptance limits, reports results, and identifies the responsible manufacturer and quality personnel. Relevant expiry or retest information also belongs in the documentation. [1]

## Start with what was tested

The useful question is more specific than “Does it have a COA?” It is “Which material was tested, against which specifications?”

A report for a raw ingredient is evidence about that ingredient. It cannot, by itself, establish the quality of a finished vial after formulation, filling, storage and shipping. FDA’s guidance treats testing, manufacturing controls and stability monitoring as distinct parts of quality assurance. [1]

Likewise, a chemical purity result is not a clinical study. FDA approval evaluates a drug for a particular use, while human trials investigate how a defined product behaves in people. [2]

## “Research use only” is a limitation

That wording is not a human-use safety certification. In a 2026 warning letter, FDA addressed a seller whose products carried research-only disclaimers while website claims promoted human uses. The agency treated the products as unapproved drugs based on their intended use. [3]

A COA can verify specified analytical results for a batch. Human safety and effectiveness require different evidence. [1][2]
