# Night-shift sleep scores: useful data, incomplete context

Wearable scores can prompt useful questions, but the device, measurement method and work schedule determine what the numbers can reasonably tell you.

A sleep or recovery score can summarize what a device recorded. It cannot, by itself, explain why a night-shift worker feels exhausted. The important questions are what the device measures, how its score is calculated and whether its intended use matches the question you are asking. [1]

The work schedule supplies context that the number alone may not capture.

## Start with the underlying record

Sleep timing, awakenings, naps and daytime sleepiness are useful parts of a clinical history. NHLBI recommends recording them alongside caffeine, alcohol, exercise and the difference between workdays and days off. [2]

Compare that record with the device's detected sleep periods. If a daytime sleep episode or nap is missing, the summary is describing an incomplete record. That is a data problem to clarify before interpreting the score.

## A consumer score is not automatically a diagnostic test

An American Academy of Sleep Medicine statement cautioned that consumer sleep technologies need appropriate validation and regulatory clearance if used to diagnose or treat a sleep disorder. Device capabilities and clearance vary, so the specific feature needs checking. [1]

The relevant distinction remains product-specific: a general wellness feature and a feature validated for a particular medical purpose are different things. [1]

## Recovery measurements have context too

Heart-rate variability describes variation between heartbeats. A review of HRV measurements emphasizes that recording duration, age and other context affect interpretation; values from different recording lengths are not interchangeable. [3]

A low score therefore needs the device and measurement method attached to it. Comparing an overnight metric with a short daytime reading may not be comparing the same thing. [3]

Bring a small sample of actual sleep records and the symptom pattern rather than only the app's headline score. A clinical assessment can consider whether the problem involves sleep opportunity, circadian timing or another disorder. [2][4]
