# Melatonin for night-shift sleep: what it can and cannot answer

Melatonin affects sleep timing, but shift-work studies have limitations. Sleep opportunity, light, schedule and other sleep problems still need attention.

Melatonin is involved in the timing of the body's sleep-wake rhythm. The evidence for supplements in shift workers has been small and inconclusive in the reviews summarized by NIH. [1]

Sleep timing, interruptions and the available sleep window remain part of the assessment.

## A timing signal is not a full sleep plan

The brain produces melatonin in response to darkness, and light at night can interfere with that production. This connects melatonin to circadian timing, rather than making it a substitute for sufficient sleep opportunity. [1][2]

For someone trying to sleep during the day, noise, interruptions, a changing work schedule or another sleep disorder may also matter. A sleep assessment considers those details rather than treating all insomnia as the same problem. [3]

## What did the shift-work studies show?

NCCIH describes reviews in which melatonin sometimes increased daytime sleep duration modestly, while other sleep outcomes did not consistently improve. The evidence was limited, and one review did not make a recommendation for its use in shift workers. [1]

The reviews leave uncertainty about which schedules and sleep problems benefit most. [1]

## What about safety and product consistency?

Short-term use appears reasonably safe for many people, but long-term safety information is limited. Reported side effects include sleepiness, dizziness, headache and nausea; interactions and particular health circumstances can also matter. [1]

NCCIH also describes studies finding that supplement contents did not always match the label. [1]

A useful discussion includes the work rotation, intended sleep window, other medicines and what has already been tried. No dosing schedule fits every version of night work.
