# Night-shift fatigue: when B12 and folate tests help

B12 and folate deficiencies can contribute to fatigue, but working nights does not establish a deficiency. Diet, absorption and symptoms guide testing.

B12 and folate deficiencies can cause anemia and fatigue. Working nights, however, does not establish that either nutrient is low. The decision to investigate a deficiency depends on symptoms, diet, absorption risks and other findings. [1][2]

## What makes B12 worth investigating?

B12 deficiency is more likely with some restrictive diets, gastrointestinal conditions or surgery that affects absorption, and certain medicines. It can cause fatigue and anemia, but neurological symptoms such as tingling or numbness may occur even without anemia. [1]

That distinction matters when a blood count is normal. The count is useful, but it does not answer every question about B12 status. [1]

## Where does folate fit?

Folate deficiency can also cause a form of anemia with unusually large red blood cells. NIH describes symptoms including weakness, fatigue and difficulty concentrating. Poor dietary intake, alcohol-related problems and malabsorption can contribute. [2]

Isolated folate deficiency is uncommon and may coexist with other nutrient deficiencies. Testing is therefore interpreted as part of the broader nutritional and medical picture. [2]

## Why the schedule still needs its own review

Inadequate sleep can mean too little total sleep, repeated awakenings or sleep that is poorly aligned with circadian rhythms. NIOSH identifies all three as relevant to people working long or unusual hours. [3]

Numbness, marked weakness or persistent fatigue should be included in the assessment alongside the sleep pattern. [1][3][4]

Bring a typical work-and-sleep pattern, food history, medicines and supplements to the evaluation. Those details help identify which deficiencies or other causes are worth investigating. [1][2][4]

The useful result is a clearer explanation of the fatigue. If a deficiency is found, its cause matters too; if it is not, the sleep and medical questions remain worth addressing. [1][2][4]
