# Hair shedding in midlife: where ferritin and thyroid tests fit

Ferritin and thyroid tests can investigate contributors to hair changes. The pattern of loss and the wider symptom history still matter.

Ferritin and thyroid tests can help investigate possible contributors to hair changes. Sudden increased shedding and gradual hereditary thinning can look similar, and some people have both. [1]

The useful starting point is the pattern: when the change began, whether more hair is shedding, and whether thinning is concentrated in a particular area.

## What can ferritin show?

Ferritin is a protein that stores iron. A blood test helps assess iron stores, and low levels can support an iron-deficiency evaluation. A high result needs more context because inflammation and other conditions can also raise ferritin. [2]

An unexpected ferritin result is interpreted with the blood count, symptoms and possible reasons for low iron. [2]

## What can thyroid testing add?

An underactive thyroid can be associated with dry or thinning hair, fatigue, cold intolerance and menstrual changes. These symptoms overlap with other conditions, so blood tests help assess whether thyroid dysfunction fits the picture. [3]

TSH is the usual initial thyroid-function test, and free T4 helps interpret the result. The American Thyroid Association also notes that biotin supplements can distort some thyroid test results, making the supplement list relevant before a draw. [4]

## The timeline helps connect the findings

Excessive shedding can appear a few months after childbirth, substantial weight loss, illness or another stressor. That delay can make the trigger less obvious. Hereditary hair loss, by comparison, often causes gradual thinning. [1]

A lab result collected this week therefore needs to be considered alongside events from previous months. It may identify a contributor, or it may leave the main explanation unresolved.
