# Menopause, Heart Health, and Bone Density: Different Assessments

An estradiol result cannot replace cardiovascular risk assessment or bone-density testing. Learn how these health questions differ.

An estradiol blood test measures a hormone. It does not measure bone density or provide a complete assessment of cardiovascular risk.

Menopause is associated with changes relevant to both bone and heart health, but those concerns need their own assessments.[1]

## A hormone result answers a limited question

The menopausal transition involves changing hormone levels and symptoms. A laboratory measurement is only one part of a person's history; it cannot describe every effect on health or daily life.

The question behind testing matters. Evaluating an unusual symptom pattern is different from deciding whether bone-density screening or cardiovascular risk review is appropriate.

## Bone density is measured separately

A DXA scan uses low-dose X-rays to assess bone mineral density. Its results can help identify low bone density and contribute to fracture-risk assessment.[2]

The decision to scan considers age and risk factors, such as a previous fracture or conditions that affect bone. A hormone level cannot substitute for the scan when that measurement is needed.

A vitamin D or calcium blood test is another kind of measurement again. It should not be described as a direct reading of bone strength.

## Heart risk involves more than estrogen

Cholesterol testing contributes to cardiovascular risk assessment, alongside family history and other health factors.[3] Blood pressure, smoking, glucose, and existing conditions may also be relevant to the wider review.

## Keep the follow-up organized

It can help to list the questions separately: symptom relief, bone health, and cardiovascular prevention. Each may lead to a different assessment or no additional testing at that time.

Bring previous blood results, any bone-density reports, and the relevant health history so the discussion can identify what is already known and what remains to be checked.
