# Lp(a): The Inherited Risk a Standard Cholesterol Test Can Miss

Lp(a) is a separate cardiovascular risk marker. Current guidance recommends testing adults at least once in a lifetime.

Lipoprotein(a), usually written Lp(a), is a cholesterol-carrying particle whose level is largely inherited. An elevated level can increase cardiovascular risk even when a standard cholesterol result looks reassuring.[1][2]

It requires a separate measurement; an LDL cholesterol value does not tell you the Lp(a) level.

## Why the result matters

Lp(a) contributes information about inherited risk. Higher levels are associated with heart disease and stroke, and with disease involving narrowing of the aortic valve.[1]

The result does not predict exactly whether or when an event will occur. It is considered alongside other factors, including LDL cholesterol, blood pressure, smoking, and family history.

## Testing guidance has broadened

Current American Heart Association guidance recommends that every adult have Lp(a) measured at least once in their lifetime.[1] This is broader than older advice focused mainly on people already suspected to be at higher risk.

A family history of early cardiovascular disease is still important context. Bring that history and any prior cholesterol reports when the test is discussed.

## Lifestyle still matters, even if the number stays high

Diet and exercise may have little effect on the inherited Lp(a) level. They remain relevant to overall cardiovascular health.[1][2]

A high result can therefore lead to a closer look at other risk factors and how they are managed.

## Keep the original report

The report's units and laboratory information matter. Save the actual result so it can be used in future assessments rather than relying on a remembered label of high or normal.

The next discussion should explain how Lp(a) changes the overall risk picture and whether that affects the existing prevention plan.
