GLP-1 is a hormone involved in appetite and glucose regulation. Medications that activate its receptor can reduce food intake through effects on appetite, while also changing how the body manages blood glucose.[1]

## Appetite and glucose are connected effects

Semaglutide activates the GLP-1 receptor. The approved medication increases insulin secretion and reduces glucagon secretion in a glucose-dependent manner. Insulin helps manage glucose, while glucagon signals the body to increase glucose availability.[1]

Its weight-management effect also involves reduced calorie intake. Feeling less hungry is part of the intended action, although the experience varies between people.

## Digestion changes too

Semaglutide delays gastric emptying, which means food leaves the stomach more slowly. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal discomfort are among its common adverse reactions.[1]

Digestive symptoms are not a measure of how well treatment is working. Persistent symptoms that interfere with eating or drinking belong in the treatment review.

## Why tirzepatide is described differently

Tirzepatide acts at both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. GIP is another hormone signal involved in glucose regulation. This dual action distinguishes its mechanism from a medication acting only at GLP-1 receptors.[2]

Suitability and response depend on the specific medication, health history, tolerability, and treatment course.

## The product still matters

Prescribing information and trials describe particular FDA-approved products. Compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide are not FDA-approved, and FDA does not review their safety, effectiveness, or quality before marketing.[3]

A discussion about treatment should identify the exact preparation and the medical reason for considering it.
