# What a Home Test Kit Can and Cannot Tell You

Home tests can answer specific health questions. Check the test’s purpose, collection instructions, and follow-up before relying on a result.

A home test can answer the question it was designed to investigate. It cannot provide an entire health assessment. What matters is the specific test, how the sample is collected, and what the result means for the concern being investigated.[1]

## Know which kind of home test it is

Some kits produce an immediate result at home. Others let someone collect a sample and send it to a laboratory. The collection method and turnaround time depend on the test.[1]

Read what the kit measures and its intended use. Screening for a risk, diagnosing a condition, and monitoring an existing condition are different purposes. A result useful for one purpose may not answer another.

## Collection and instructions affect the result

The instructions can specify timing, sample handling, and other preparation. Follow the kit's directions and check the expiration date. Even small departures from the collection procedure can affect results.[1]

A rejected sample is different from a negative result. A result also needs the report's units, reference information, and any stated limitations to be interpreted correctly.[2]

If a product advertises an overall wellness score, identify the actual measurements behind it. Direct-to-consumer tests vary in the evidence supporting their claims.[3]

## Plan the follow-up before ordering

Find out who explains an unexpected finding and whether confirmation or a separate appointment may be needed. Keep the original report available for that review.

A normal result does not rule out every cause of an ongoing symptom. An abnormal result does not always identify a diagnosis without additional context.[2]
