# Grip Strength and Walking Speed: What They Measure

Strength and walking tests describe physical function. Learn what they add to body weight and when a change deserves attention.

Grip strength measures how much force someone can produce with their hand. Walking speed measures how quickly they cover a defined distance. Both can contribute to an assessment of physical function, which body weight alone cannot describe.[1]

These tests are particularly useful when familiar activities have become harder: carrying groceries, getting out of a chair, or walking a usual route.

## Two tests, different information

Grip strength is measured with a device called a dynamometer. The equipment, position, and testing method matter. A result needs comparison with an appropriate reference population, rather than a universal online target.[1]

Walking speed involves more than muscle strength. Balance, nervous-system function, and other factors contribute to movement. A slow result therefore prompts a broader assessment rather than identifying one cause.

A chair-rise test may provide another view of lower-body strength and endurance.

## How clinicians use the results

The European consensus on sarcopenia, a condition involving loss of muscle strength and quantity or quality, places low strength at the start of its assessment. Muscle measurements help confirm the diagnosis, while physical-performance tests help characterize severity.[1]

## Changes in daily life still count

Difficulty with stairs or carrying a familiar load is worth describing even without a test result. Note when the change began, whether pain is involved, and whether it followed an illness or period of inactivity.

For general fitness, public guidance includes both aerobic activity and muscle strengthening.[2] A formal function assessment can help clarify a new limitation; a scale cannot provide that information, even if body weight has stayed the same.
