# Sulfur burps on semaglutide: what the symptom can tell you

Belching is a recognized semaglutide side effect. An egg-like taste alone cannot identify the cause; accompanying symptoms matter more.

Belching is listed as an adverse reaction to approved semaglutide treatment. Some people describe an unpleasant or egg-like taste, but that description alone does not identify its cause or show how well treatment is working. [1]

The more useful question is what else is happening: reflux, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain or difficulty eating and drinking.

## Describe more than the taste

Tell the prescriber when the burping started, whether it is occasional or persistent, and whether a prescribed dose change preceded it. Mention fullness, constipation, diarrhea or discomfort if they are present too.

Semaglutide delays stomach emptying, and its label recognizes several digestive side effects. That provides a reason to discuss the symptom; it does not establish a specific explanation for the odor. [1]

## Reflux can add another symptom

When stomach contents return to the throat or mouth, the taste may be unpleasant or acidic. This is regurgitation, a symptom of reflux. Heartburn, cough and hoarseness can also occur. [2]

If that sounds like the experience, describe it plainly. “Food comes back into my throat after dinner” gives a provider different information from “I burp more often.”

## Know when it needs faster attention

Stomach symptoms that are severe or will not go away need a prescriber review. Persistent vomiting or diarrhea can cause dehydration. Severe or persistent abdominal pain, including pain that reaches the back, requires immediate medical attention because it can be a sign of pancreatitis. [1]

Trouble swallowing, bloody vomit or black, tarry stool also needs prompt medical assessment. [2]
