# Heartburn during GLP-1 treatment: what to report

Reflux can occur during semaglutide treatment. The timing, severity and accompanying symptoms help a provider assess what is happening.

Heartburn and reflux are listed among adverse reactions to approved semaglutide treatment. Semaglutide also delays stomach emptying. New reflux during treatment is worth discussing, but its timing alone does not prove the medication is the only cause. [1]

## What reflux can feel like

Heartburn is a burning sensation behind the breastbone that may rise toward the throat. Regurgitation means stomach contents come back into the throat or mouth, sometimes leaving an acidic taste. Reflux can also involve nausea, coughing, hoarseness or swallowing problems. [2]

Tell the provider which ones are occurring and whether they interrupt sleep or make eating difficult.

## The timeline helps the assessment

Useful details include when symptoms began, whether a prescribed dose change preceded them, whether particular meals seem related and whether reflux happened before treatment. Other medicines and health conditions can also contribute. [1][2]

The semaglutide label advises reporting stomach symptoms that are severe or do not go away. A review can consider tolerability and other explanations, rather than assuming that everyone should wait for symptoms to settle. [1]

Keep the exact medication name and current instructions available when contacting the prescriber. Avoid making a dose change based on another person's experience.

## Some symptoms need prompt care

Trouble swallowing, persistent vomiting, bloody vomit or black, tarry stool requires medical attention. Chest pain also needs assessment and should not automatically be labeled heartburn. [2]

Severe or persistent abdominal pain, particularly if it reaches the back, is another warning sign described in the semaglutide label. Seek immediate medical care for that pattern. [1]
