Digestive symptoms are common with semaglutide. Severity, persistence and accompanying symptoms determine how quickly to seek help.

Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort are recognized side effects of approved semaglutide treatment. The medication label also describes uncommon but serious risks. Knowing the difference helps you decide when to contact the prescriber and when to seek urgent help. [1]

The information for your exact medication remains the reference for its warnings and instructions.

## Contact the prescriber about symptoms that persist

Stomach symptoms that are severe or do not go away need review. So do symptoms that repeatedly interfere with eating, drinking or normal activities. The semaglutide label also advises reporting a racing or pounding heartbeat at rest and changes in vision. [1]

You do not need to wait until the next scheduled appointment to report a concern. Include when it started, how it has changed and any recent prescribed dose change.

## Seek urgent help for warning signs

Severe or persistent abdominal pain, including pain that reaches the back, can be a sign of pancreatitis. The label directs patients to stop treatment and contact a healthcare professional right away for this symptom. [1]

Trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling of the face or throat, or fainting with signs of an allergic reaction requires immediate medical help. [1]

Repeated vomiting or diarrhea can also cause dehydration. If you cannot keep fluids down or feel seriously unwell, seek prompt care instead of treating it as ordinary adjustment. [1]

## Make follow-up easy to use

Before starting, know how to reach the prescriber, where to find the medication instructions and what to do outside normal office hours. Keep the exact product name available when asking for help.

A short symptom note is usually enough: what happened, when, whether you can eat and drink, and whether pain or another symptom is present. It gives the care team something specific to assess.
