# Who can be considered for weight-management medication?

BMI is one part of eligibility. Weight-related conditions, medical history, medicines and the specific product also shape the decision.

A very high BMI is not the only situation in which weight-management medication may be considered. NIDDK describes common adult criteria as a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with a weight-related health condition, such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes. [1]

Meeting those criteria starts an assessment. It does not establish that a particular medication is appropriate.

## BMI answers a limited question

BMI relates weight to height. It is used in many treatment criteria, but it is only one part of a person's health assessment. NIDDK also identifies current health conditions, other medicines, family medical history, possible side effects and likely benefits as factors in choosing medication. [1]

## The product and intended use matter

Different medications have different approved uses and restrictions. The approved semaglutide weight-management label includes adults with obesity and adults with overweight who have at least one weight-related condition. It also sets out contraindications and precautions that must be considered separately. [2]

A blood test or waist measurement may help characterize health risk. Neither should be treated as a shortcut around the requirements and safety review for the actual product being considered.

## The discussion should include the longer term

Weight-management medicines are used alongside eating and physical-activity changes. Follow-up considers response, tolerability and whether continuing treatment remains appropriate. Cost and the ability to maintain care are also relevant to the choice. [1]

For a first conversation, bring a current medication list, relevant diagnoses and a brief history of prior weight-management approaches. Describe what you want help with in concrete terms, such as managing a weight-related condition or improving an activity affected by weight.
