# When GLP-1 treatment changes your appetite, what happens to meals?

A smaller appetite changes meal planning. Food quality, tolerability and enough nutrition still matter, especially when cooking for a household.

A smaller appetite can make familiar portions feel too large. It can also make it easier to miss meals or eat a narrower range of foods. During GLP-1 treatment, the aim is to keep meals manageable while still meeting nutritional needs. [1]

For someone cooking for a household, that does not necessarily mean preparing a completely separate dinner.

## Start with what is actually getting eaten

A useful nutrition review considers the day's intake, including meals that are skipped and foods that have become difficult to tolerate. Appetite changes and gastrointestinal side effects can both affect how much and how varied a person eats. [1]

For example, saying “I serve dinner but stop after a few bites, then have nothing until lunch” gives more useful information than saying appetite is low. It shows where the daily routine may need attention.

## Smaller portions still need variety

The joint nutrition advisory identifies protein intake and nutrient density as priorities when overall food intake falls. It discusses foods such as eggs, fish, dairy, beans and lentils as possible protein sources, depending on the person's preferences and needs. [1]

A shared meal can be served in different portions, with its main components kept recognizable. This makes it easier to describe what is being eaten and to adjust with a dietitian if necessary.

## Poor intake is worth reporting

If nausea, vomiting or persistent fullness repeatedly prevents eating, tell the prescriber. The approved semaglutide label advises reporting stomach problems that are severe or do not go away. It also warns about dehydration associated with gastrointestinal symptoms. [2]

Nutrition support can address practical constraints too: a limited grocery budget, shift work, food aversions or a kitchen shared with children. [1]
