Nausea is a recognized side effect of semaglutide treatment. Persistent symptoms, worsening symptoms or difficulty keeping fluids down should be reported to the prescriber. “Common” does not mean something must be endured without review. [1]

## Describe the pattern

The prescriber needs more than a rating of “bad.” Helpful details include:

- When nausea began and whether it followed a prescribed dose change.
- Whether vomiting, diarrhea, constipation or abdominal pain is also present.
- Whether you can eat and keep fluids down.
- Whether the symptoms are improving, recurring or becoming more intense.

Gastrointestinal symptoms often occur during treatment initiation or dose escalation. The nutrition advisory for GLP-1 care emphasizes reviewing symptoms and intake as part of treatment, including when a slower progression may need consideration by the prescriber. [2]

Dose decisions belong with the prescribing professional.

## Eating and drinking may need attention

Large meals can worsen symptoms for some people, while prolonged periods without eating may also be unhelpful. The advisory discusses smaller meals and adequate fluids as options within individualized symptom management. [2]

If nausea is repeatedly preventing food or fluid intake, that is useful clinical information, not a sign that treatment is working especially well.

## Know the symptoms that need faster help

The semaglutide label warns that vomiting or diarrhea can cause dehydration and kidney problems. Severe or persistent abdominal pain, sometimes extending to the back, can signal pancreatitis and requires immediate medical attention. Trouble breathing or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat also requires emergency help. [1]
