# A post-vacation weight increase during GLP-1 maintenance

A short-term scale change can include water and other mass, not just fat. The pattern over time is more informative than one post-travel reading.

One higher scale reading after a vacation cannot tell you how much body fat changed. Body weight includes water and stored carbohydrate as well as fat and other tissues. Glycogen, the body's stored carbohydrate, is held with water, so changes in its storage can affect weight. [1]

That makes a short-term increase different from a sustained upward trend during maintenance.

## Why can the scale move quickly?

Research on glycogen storage has shown how dietary changes can produce weight fluctuations through associated water. The study was small and examined a restrictive-diet setting; it does not calculate how much of a particular vacation increase is water. [1]

Bowel patterns may also change during travel. NIDDK lists travel, changes in eating, inadequate fluid and some medicines among contributors to constipation. Constipation is also a recognized adverse reaction with semaglutide and tirzepatide. [2][3][4]

## What makes a trend more interpretable?

Comparisons are clearer when the scale and measurement conditions are consistent. Include the dates and note the travel period, bowel changes and any interruption in the prescribed treatment. This creates a more useful record than comparing the lowest pre-trip reading with the highest post-trip reading.

If a rise continues, it belongs in the maintenance review. The discussion can examine whether the current treatment remains effective and tolerable, rather than assuming that a single reading requires a medication change. [5]

## Why medication changes are a separate question

A randomized tirzepatide withdrawal trial found substantially more regain after switching to placebo than after continuing treatment. That supports taking treatment continuity seriously, but the study measured outcomes over months. It does not explain a brief change after a trip. [6]

A persistent upward trend is a reason to review maintenance, with the travel period and treatment history in view.
