# GGT: what this liver test adds to a standard panel

GGT can help interpret other liver tests, particularly an elevated ALP. It is not part of a standard comprehensive metabolic panel.

GGT is an enzyme found mainly in the liver. A blood test can detect an increase when the liver or bile ducts are affected, but the result does not identify a specific cause on its own. [1]

It is not one of the standard measurements in a comprehensive metabolic panel. That panel includes other liver-related tests, such as ALT, AST, alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin and albumin. [2]

## Why order GGT separately?

One useful role is clarifying an elevated alkaline phosphatase, or ALP. ALP can rise with either liver or bone conditions. GGT can help distinguish between those possibilities because bone disease does not raise it in the same way. [1]

When both ALP and GGT are elevated, a liver or bile-duct source becomes more likely. An elevated ALP with normal GGT can point toward a bone source. The pattern guides further assessment; it does not establish the exact diagnosis. [1]

GGT may also be used when symptoms or other liver results suggest a problem, or in monitoring related to alcohol use disorder. [1]

## Why a high result needs context

Alcohol use can increase GGT. Other influences include medicines and the conditions under which the sample was collected. Food can affect the measurement, so preparation instructions matter. [1]

The interpretation should include symptoms, medication use and the other liver measurements. [1]

The number on the report also needs the laboratory's own reference range. Different methods can produce different ranges, and results should be compared with the range that accompanied the test. [3]

## Does everyone need it in a baseline panel?

GGT has a specific diagnostic role, particularly when another result needs clarification. Its absence from a routine metabolic panel does not by itself mean an important finding was missed. [1][2]

The practical question is what the test would clarify in your case. If ALP is elevated, that may be easy to explain. If it is being offered simply as an additional “longevity” marker, ask how the result would change the assessment or follow-up.
