# Your first GLP-1 consultation: what gets reviewed

A first GLP-1 visit covers health history, treatment goals, medication safety, product details and follow-up. A prescription is only one possible outcome.

A first GLP-1 consultation is a review of whether a particular medicine fits your health needs. It should connect your weight history and goals with the expected benefits, possible side effects, other medicines and cost. [1]

You do not need to arrive with a treatment decision already made.

## Your history provides the starting point

The conversation commonly covers previous weight-management efforts, related health conditions, current medicines and family history. Pregnancy plans are also relevant because weight-management medicines are not used during pregnancy. [1]

For semaglutide and tirzepatide, specific safety questions include a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2. Their approved weight-management labels list these as contraindications. A history of severe stomach-emptying problems, pancreatitis or gallbladder symptoms also belongs in the review. [2][3]

Other prescriptions matter. Some combinations increase the risk of low blood sugar, and tirzepatide has a specific interaction that can reduce the effectiveness of oral hormonal contraceptives. [2][3]

## Know exactly which product is being discussed

The active ingredient, formulation and approval status should be clear. Evidence for an approved product does not automatically establish the same results for a different compounded preparation. Compounded drugs are not FDA approved; the FDA does not review their safety, effectiveness or quality before marketing. [4]

Semaglutide and tirzepatide also have different product instructions. A plan should identify what is prescribed and how questions about administration will be handled. [2][3]

## What follow-up should cover

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation are among the common side effects in the approved labels. Persistent or severe symptoms need a response, particularly when vomiting or diarrhea could cause dehydration. [2][3]

Follow-up is also where the treatment's value is reassessed: whether it is helping, whether side effects are acceptable, and whether the expense and routine remain workable. [1]

Before the visit ends, it should be clear who handles questions, how follow-up is arranged, and what the full cost includes. Those practical details help turn a possible prescription into a plan you can evaluate.
