# Feeling well: what a baseline health visit can still tell you

Blood pressure and selected blood tests can add information you cannot get from how strong or energetic you feel.

You can feel well and still have high blood pressure or cholesterol. High blood pressure usually has no symptoms, and cholesterol testing helps assess cardiovascular risk before a heart problem occurs. [1][2]

That is the practical reason for a baseline visit: to check selected risks that are difficult to feel, then decide whether anything needs attention.

## Start with the question, not the size of the panel

Blood pressure is a measurement taken outside a blood draw. A lipid panel supplies a different kind of information: the amounts of cholesterol and triglycerides circulating in your blood. The value of these results depends partly on age, family history, smoking and other health conditions. [1][2]

Blood tests may also investigate a particular symptom. For instance, a metabolic panel can give information about glucose, kidney and liver measurements, and fluid or electrolyte balance. Whether it belongs in a visit depends on the health question being addressed. [3]

A useful explanation should make that purpose clear. “We are checking this because...” is more helpful than receiving a long list of unfamiliar abbreviations.

## What would happen after an unusual result?

A result outside the reference range does not automatically mean disease. The clinician may compare it with other results, review medicines or preparation, or repeat a test before drawing a conclusion. Even a result within range may need follow-up if symptoms suggest a problem. [4]

This is why a baseline includes the circumstances around the measurement. Hard exercise, food, supplements and whether preparation instructions were followed can affect some blood tests. [4]

## Make the visit useful to you

Bring the concerns that would actually change your day: being unusually winded, a change in stamina, poor sleep, or a family member's early heart disease. If you feel well, say so. The visit can still establish which checks are relevant and when they should be revisited. [1][2][3]

After the visit, you should know what was checked, what it showed and whether follow-up is needed.
