New bladder urgency around menopause can have several explanations. Infection, constipation, certain medicines and bladder or nerve conditions can contribute. Menopause can also be associated with pelvic-floor changes. An evaluation looks at the symptoms and possible causes together. [1]

The first useful detail is what is happening: a sudden hard-to-delay urge, leaking before reaching the bathroom, leaking with a cough, or waking repeatedly to urinate. These are different patterns, even when someone describes all of them as “bladder trouble.” [1]

## Urgency and stress leakage are different

Urgency is a strong need to urinate that may be difficult to postpone. Stress leakage happens with pressure on the bladder, such as coughing, sneezing or physical activity. Both patterns can occur in the same person. [1]

NIDDK identifies menopause among factors that can weaken the pelvic floor and contribute to stress incontinence. That does not establish menopause as the cause of every new urinary symptom. [1]

Describing the exact pattern helps the provider decide what to investigate.

## The history often provides the first clues

A provider may ask about when symptoms started, fluid intake, medicines, bowel habits, previous surgery and other health conditions. An examination can assess factors such as pelvic-floor function or pelvic organ prolapse. [2]

A bladder diary can record:

- What and when you drink.
- When you urinate.
- Episodes of urgency or leakage.
- What you were doing when leakage occurred.

These details can reveal a pattern that is hard to recall during an appointment. [2]

## Testing is selected for the symptoms

Urinalysis can help look for infection and other possible contributors. Additional tests, such as measuring bladder function or using imaging, are considered when the history and initial findings call for them. [2]

Blood in the urine, painful urination, or difficulty emptying the bladder needs prompt medical attention. Being unable to pass urine requires immediate care. [1]
