# What “research use only” means on a peptide vial

Research-use labeling does not establish suitability for human treatment. Product identity, approval status and the dispensing source are separate checks.

A vial labeled “research use only” is not evidence that the product is suitable for human treatment. FDA warns against products falsely sold for research purposes while being marketed to people for use as drugs. Their quality may be unknown, and they may be harmful. [1]

This distinction matters when a product is advertised for recovery, weight loss or another health goal. The claim on a sales page does not establish what is in the vial or whether the intended use has supporting evidence.

## A familiar ingredient name is only one detail

Two listings can use the same ingredient name while leaving important questions unanswered: the actual contents, formulation, concentration and preparation standards. A name, a laboratory-looking certificate or a purity percentage cannot answer every question about the finished product.

FDA's warnings about unapproved GLP-1 products illustrate why the exact formulation matters. The agency has identified concerns involving fraudulent labels, dosing errors and salt forms that differ from the active ingredient in approved products. [1]

These are product-specific issues. A comparison based only on price per vial misses them.

## Compounded medication has a different purpose

Compounding involves preparing a medication to meet a particular patient's medical needs. It is not a route for treating every substance sold online as an appropriate prescription option. [2]

Compounded medications are not FDA-approved. FDA does not review their safety, effectiveness or quality before marketing, and poor preparation can produce contamination or an incorrect amount of active ingredient. [2]

A prescription therefore answers only part of the question. The proposed use still needs a medical rationale, and the dispensing source needs to be identifiable.

## Check who supplies the product

FDA recommends checking that an online pharmacy requires a prescription, has a U.S. address, is licensed by a state pharmacy board and offers access to a licensed pharmacist. [3]

FDA advises against purchasing unapproved GLP-1 products sold for human use under research-only labels. [1]
