# Erection difficulties: what a health evaluation considers

Erection changes can involve circulation, medicines, stress and daily habits. Understanding the pattern helps clarify what needs attention.

Erection difficulties can have physical and emotional causes, often in combination. Circulation, nerves, medicines, certain health conditions and stress can all be involved. A useful evaluation starts with what has changed and when it happens. [1]

The concern may be getting an erection, keeping it long enough for sex, or both. Being clear about that experience makes it easier to discuss than using a broad label such as “performance.” [1]

## Describe the change in everyday terms

It helps to distinguish trouble with erections from a change in sexual interest. Tell the provider which experience is bothering you, whether it began suddenly or gradually, and whether it happens consistently or only sometimes.

There is no need to arrive with a theory about the cause. A simple description is enough: “I want sex, but I keep losing my erection,” or “Both my interest and erections have changed.” Those statements give the conversation a starting point without assuming the same explanation applies to both.

## Physical health belongs in the conversation

NIDDK lists diabetes, heart and blood vessel disease, chronic kidney disease and certain hormone problems among conditions that can contribute to erectile dysfunction. Medicines can also play a role. [1]

Bring a current medication list and mention relevant health changes. This is particularly useful when a sexual concern begins after a new medicine or an illness. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without discussing it with the prescriber.

## Stress and daily habits can also matter

Anxiety, depression, stress and worry about sexual performance can contribute to erection difficulties or make them worse. Smoking, drinking too much alcohol and too little physical activity can also be involved. [1]

These are possible contributors to discuss, not reasons to blame yourself. More than one factor may be present, and a difficult experience can add pressure to the next one.

If a partner is involved, describing the difficulty without treating it as a measure of attraction can make the conversation more specific: what is happening, how it feels and what support would help.
