# Creatine and the scale: water weight is part of the picture

Creatine can increase body weight through water retention. NIH identifies weight gain as a common effect in creatine studies, so a change after starting it can have a different explanation from increased body fat. [1]

That is relevant during weight maintenance, including for someone using a GLP-1 medication. The timing is useful information; it does not establish the cause of every change on the scale.

## What the scale captures

Body weight is total mass. A scale reading does not separate fat, muscle or water. Creatine research therefore needs to be read with attention to what was measured: total weight, lean tissue, strength or another outcome. [1]

Those measures answer different questions. A higher weight alongside a change in training is not enough information to calculate how much muscle or fat changed.

## Give the change a timeline

For a follow-up conversation, the useful facts include when the supplement began, the product and amount being used, how the weight changed over time and whether other symptoms appeared.

A record of the actual readings is clearer than the conclusion “the medication stopped working.” It lets a provider consider the sequence alongside eating patterns, activity, other medicines and the original treatment plan.

## Creatine and creatinine are related terms

Creatine is converted in the body to creatinine, a waste product removed by the kidneys. [1]

Because creatinine can appear on a blood-test report, supplement use is relevant information to share when results are reviewed. Lab interpretation uses the person's history, medicines and supplements along with the results and their reference ranges. [2]

A laboratory finding should be assessed in that context rather than assumed to be harmless because creatine is being used.

## When the change needs a different discussion

Recent swelling with weight gain warrants prompt medical assessment, particularly if fatigue is also present. [3]
