# Persistent fatigue: what a medical evaluation adds

An energy supplement and a fatigue evaluation answer different questions. What the evaluation looks at before discussing a product.

A fatigue evaluation investigates why energy has changed. A supplement subscription supplies a product. Both may be marketed to someone who feels exhausted, but they are different purchases.

Fatigue can be associated with sleep problems, iron deficiency, thyroid disease, medicines, mood and other health conditions. The evaluation depends on the symptoms and history rather than the name on an “energy” package. [1]

## The first task is to describe the fatigue

Feeling sleepy, feeling physically weak and lacking energy are not identical experiences. MedlinePlus distinguishes fatigue from drowsiness, although they can occur together. [1]

An evaluation may explore when the change began, sleep quality, daily demands, other symptoms and the medicines or supplements involved. A physical examination and selected tests may follow. Tests can investigate possible causes such as anemia or thyroid, kidney and liver problems, but the same set is not needed for every person. [1]

## What a supplement label can explain

A Supplement Facts panel identifies ingredients and amounts, with some limitations for proprietary blends. It can help establish what the product contains. It does not establish the cause of fatigue. [2]

FDA does not approve dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness before they reach the market. Manufacturers are responsible for meeting the applicable safety and labeling requirements. A claim such as “supports energy” therefore needs to be assessed separately from the fact that a product is available for sale. [2]

## Be specific about “adrenal support”

“Adrenal fatigue” is sometimes used to explain exhaustion after prolonged stress. The Endocrine Society states that it is not an established medical condition and that tests marketed to diagnose it lack scientific support. Actual adrenal disorders require a different medical evaluation. [3]

An unsupported diagnosis can delay finding the cause of the symptoms.

## Compare what the fee includes

For a service offering fatigue assessment, the written offer should clarify the consultation, whether testing costs are separate, how results are reviewed and how follow-up works. For a supplement subscription, the comparison concerns the exact contents, charge and renewal terms.
