# What a normal CBC does and does not tell you

A complete blood count measures blood cells. Why cholesterol, glucose and other health questions may require different tests.

A normal complete blood count means the measured blood-cell values fall within the laboratory's ranges. It does not mean that every possible cause of symptoms has been tested.

The word “complete” refers to the blood count. It is not a promise of a complete health assessment. [1]

## What is counted

A CBC measures red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. It also reports hemoglobin, hematocrit and red-cell size. A CBC with differential adds information about the different types of white blood cells. [1]

These measurements can help investigate anemia, infection and blood disorders. A provider considers the pattern, symptoms and history when deciding what the results mean. [1]

For example, hemoglobin is relevant to the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity. It is a different measurement from the amount of glucose or cholesterol in the blood.

## The questions that need other measurements

Several familiar tests sit outside a CBC:

- **Blood chemistry:** a comprehensive metabolic panel includes glucose, electrolytes, proteins and measurements used in kidney and liver assessment. [2]
- **Average blood glucose:** an A1C test reflects roughly two to three months of glucose exposure. [3]
- **Cholesterol and triglycerides:** a lipid panel contributes to cardiovascular risk assessment. [4]

These tests answer different questions. That does not mean they all need to be ordered whenever a CBC is normal.

## If the original symptom is still there

Fatigue has many possible causes. Sleep disorders, iron deficiency, thyroid problems, medicines and other conditions may be relevant. Evaluation begins with the experience itself: when it started, whether it is constant, what else changed and what other symptoms occur. [5]

A normal CBC is useful information within that evaluation. It can narrow some questions while leaving others open.

Keeping a copy of the actual report also helps. “Bloodwork was normal” is less precise than knowing which tests were performed and which results were available.
