# Why the afternoon slump may start the night before

Sleep timing, travel and caffeine can all affect afternoon alertness. How their timing helps explain a recurring energy dip.

An afternoon energy dip can reflect sleep timing, insufficient sleep, caffeine effects or another cause of fatigue. The time on the clock alone cannot identify the cause.

For someone who travels or works changing shifts, the more useful timeline includes when sleep happened, when light exposure changed and when caffeine was consumed. [1][2]

## The body keeps its own time

Circadian rhythms are daily patterns that influence sleep, hormone release, appetite and other functions. Light and darkness are their strongest environmental cues. Crossing time zones or working overnight can put the sleep schedule out of step with those rhythms, affecting alertness and concentration. [1]

The result can be tiredness at an inconvenient hour even when there was an opportunity to sleep. A changing schedule and a short sleep period can occur together, making a single explanation difficult.

## Coffee can affect a later part of the day

Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, and its effects can remain noticeable for several hours. It can also cause insomnia, restlessness or anxiety, with sensitivity varying between people. [2]

That makes timing relevant. A drink used to get through a late shift may still affect the next sleep period. The caffeine may also come from tea, energy drinks, supplements or other products, so counting only cups of coffee can miss part of the picture.

For regular caffeine users, suddenly stopping can cause drowsiness, headache and trouble concentrating. Those effects can complicate the story of an apparent “crash.” [2]

## Sleepiness and fatigue are different experiences

Sleepiness is the urge to fall asleep. Fatigue is a lack of energy or motivation. They can overlap, but describing which is happening helps an evaluation. [3]

Persistent fatigue can be associated with sleep disorders, iron deficiency, thyroid problems, medication effects and other conditions. A provider may use the symptom pattern, an examination and selected tests to investigate it. [3]

A useful account of a difficult week is simple: sleep periods, shift or travel changes, caffeinated products and the times symptoms were strongest. Fatigue that remains unexplained or does not improve with adequate rest deserves evaluation. [3]
