# Which blood tests answer your health question?

A CBC, metabolic panel, cholesterol test and A1C measure different things. How to connect the test to the question instead of buying more numbers.

A CBC measures blood cells. A metabolic panel measures blood chemistry. A1C and cholesterol tests answer different questions again. Knowing those distinctions makes a test list easier to understand.

## What common tests measure

**A complete blood count, or CBC, measures blood cells.** It includes red and white blood cells, platelets, hemoglobin and related measures. These findings can contribute to an investigation of anemia, infection or other blood-related concerns. A CBC does not measure cholesterol or average blood sugar. [1]

**A comprehensive metabolic panel, or CMP, measures blood chemistry.** Its 14 measurements include glucose, electrolytes, proteins, liver-related enzymes and waste products used to assess kidney function. Results can help investigate symptoms or monitor a condition or treatment. [2]

**A1C estimates average blood glucose over roughly two to three months.** It serves a different purpose from a glucose reading at one moment. Conditions affecting red blood cells can make it less reliable, so interpretation depends on the person's circumstances. [3]

**A lipid panel measures cholesterol and triglycerides.** Those results contribute to an assessment of cardiovascular risk alongside age, family history and other risk factors. [4]

These tests may overlap within a larger panel, but their purposes remain distinct.

## “Normal” does not mean every question is answered

A laboratory's reference range describes results in a reference population. Someone without a health problem can have an out-of-range result, and someone with symptoms can have results inside the range. The pattern and the clinical context matter. [5]

An internet “optimal” range is not automatically a better target. Its relevance depends on the particular measurement and the evidence behind the proposed goal.

## Connect the test to a next step

Before ordering a panel, useful questions are:

- Which concern does each test investigate?
- Is this screening, a symptom evaluation or follow-up?
- What would an abnormal result change?
- Are any tests already included in recent records?

Prior reports, current medicines, symptoms, and risk factors help determine which tests would be useful. [5]
